A Team of 23 competitors represented the State Team at the
2011 NAS South
Australian State Championships. There was good support throughout the day from
non-competing team members and parents. There were mixed results on the
day but
team members took out 11 State Championships, 19 Runners up and 10 third
places. It was a very
good effort, with a high percentage of competitors taking home at least one trophy.
Demonstrations and Creative Weaponry were combined and the Syncronised team of Daniel Andrew, Jason Spiteri and Margie Hookway were narrowly outpointed to place second. However they qualified to represent SA in Junior Syncronised Forms at the NAS Nationals. Continuous events are not our strongest events, but several team members took part with mixed success. Jasmine Harford placed third in Combined 10-11 years and Lucille Lott second in her Female 12-14 years division. Ben Tynan was second and Callum Boyd third in their 15-17 year Male division. In Male Advanced Continuous, Nik McDonald and David Boyd lost their first round bouts against strong opponents. Juniors as always did well, with all taking home at least one trophy. Jasmine Harford placed second in Forms and was unplaced in Sparring in the 10-11 year Advanced competition. James Swift was our representative in the 12-13 year Novice division and he won Forms and placed second in Sparring. In the 12-13 year Advanced section, Lucille Lott placed second in Forms and came third in Female Sparring. In the 14-15 year Advanced section, Daniel Andrew won, Margie Hookway was second and Jason Spiteri third in the combined Forms event. Jason and Daniel faced each other in the final of the Male Sparring, with Jason taking out the event with Daniel second. Margie lost a close Female final to finish second. In 16-17 years Advanced Forms, Ben Tynan placed second and Callum Boyd third, and in the Male Sparring, Callum Boyd placed third, with Ben Tynan unfortuately unable to compete due to injury in his Continuous event. On to Senior Action and Kathryn Brink had another great day in taking out both Forms and Sparring in the Female Internmediate section. Lindy Swift was placed second in both events. The Male Intermediate Forms event saw David Boyd take out second place, Steve Tyler was third and Simon Muir unplaced. In Sparring, Steve Tyler placed second and Simon Muir third. In Female Advanced, Kate Jamieson won was first in Forms with Zoe Tyler second, with Kate winning a close bout over Zoe to take out Sparring as well. In Male Advanced, Peter Baker took out the Forms event. Veteran action saw Mary Bambacus place second, Linda Neighbour third, with David Boyd, Barbera Hesselschwerdt and Peter Baker unplaced in the combined Forms event. In Male Sparring, Peter Baker placed first and Steve Tyler took out third place. In Female Sparring, Barb Hesselschwerdt was first with Linda Neighbour second. The Black Belt Open event was one where there were several changes in competitors. In Female Forms, Barb HesselSchwerdt, our only competitor, took out the event, a just reward for all the hard work throughout the year. Daniel Tregenza placed second in Male Forms, with Nik McDonald and Ian Rollings unplaced in a very strong competition. Barb Hesselschwerdt, again our only competitor in Sparring, lost the third place bout to finish in fourth place. Male Sparring was best forgotten, with all four competitors elimininated early. The best placed finisher was Nik McDonald who fought off for third place but missed out. With many team members qualified for the State Championships, Coaches Sensei's Jeremy and Shane are looking forward to an even more successful Tournament in September. The support of non competing team members was much appreciated as was the coaching assistance. Well done to all on a great start to the year.
