A small team of 21 competitors represented the State Team at Round 2 of the 2011 NAS South Australian local season. There were several changes from Round 1 with some competitors missing due to either injury or focussing on coaching. At the end of the day, team members took out 18 firsts, 13 seconds, 8 third places, plus 7 fourth places by virtue of losing Sparring third place bouts or tied for Forms. It was a very good effort, with only a couple competitors not taking home at least one trophy and they were in large divisions. The day started well, with the team of Daniel Andrew, Jason Spiteri and Margie Hookway taking out first place and the team of Callum Boyd and Ben Tynan placing second in the Junior Demonstration event.

While Continuous events are not our strongest events, several team members took part with mixed success. James Swift found the competition a bit too strong on the day to finish fourth in the Male 12 - 14 year event. Jasmine Harford took on the boys in the 10-11 year combined event and this time won quite convincingly to take out the event. Callum Boyd finished third and Ben Tynan made the final of the 15-17 year Male event, but had to settle for second place. In Female Advanced Continuous, Lindy Swift took out second place, while in the Male event, Nik McDonald and Simon Muir lost first round bouts

Juniors as always did wekll, with all taking home at least one trophy. Jasmine Harford won the Forms and was unplaced in Sparring in the 10-11 year Advanced competition. James Swift was our representative in the 12-13 year Novice division and he placed second in Forms and placed third in Sparring. Jason Spiteri took out Forms and Male Sparring in the 12-13 year Advanced section. In the 14-15 year novice section, Mary Kelly was first in Forms and in Female Sparring. In the Advanced section, Margie Hookway took out the combined Forms event, with Daniel Andrew in second place. Daniel was third in Male Sparring, while Margie took out the Female event. In 16 - 17 years Advanced Forms, Callum Boyd placed second, with Ben Tynan third. Callum made the Sparring final and his opponent was too good on the day, while Ben lost the third place bout to finish in fourth place.

On to Senior Action and Kathryn Brink had another great day in taking out both Forms and Sparring in the Female Novice section. The Male Intermediate Forms event saw Simon Muir place first and Steve Tyler second, whilst in Sparring, Simon Muir placed first but Steve Tyler narrowly lost his third place bout. In Female Intermediate, Lindy Swift took out second place in both Forms and Sparring. In Female Advanced, Kate Jamieson won Forms from Rhiannon Ralph, whilst in Sparring, Kate was first.

Veteran action saw Barb Hesselschwerdt place third in the combined Forms event, with Mary Bambacus and Peter Baker fourth and fifth respectively. In Sparring, Peter Baker and Steve Tyler fought out for third place, with the trophy going to Peter.

The Black Belt Open event was one where there were several changes in competitors. In Female Forms, Barb HesselSchwerdt took out the event from Tanya Tregenza, with Mary Bambacus in fourth place. Daniel Tregenza took out the Male Forms, with Nik McDonald and Ian Rollings unplaced in a very strong competition. Tanya Tregenza was our only competitor in Sparring and made the final, only to lose a close bout. In Male Sparring, in a good result, Daniel Tregenza won the event, with Nik McDonald outpointing Ian Rollings in the battle for third place.

With many team members qualified for the State Championships, Coaches Sensei's Jeremy and Shane are looking forward to an even more successful Tournament in September. The support of non competing team members was much appreciated as was the coaching assistance. Well done to all on a great start to the year. Thanks to John McDonald, Lesley McDonald, Linda Neighbour and Drew Andrew for Photos.
