NAS Round 2 2010

Back to Tournament Revue Main Page

A slightly smaller team of 31 competitors entered Round 2 of the 2010 local season, with the newer competitors having 3 months of solid training behind them. Even with the smaller team, it was a good result with Team members winning 48 places, consisting of with 24 firsts, 12 seconds and 12 thirds. During the Tournament opening, the members of the victorious SA Female Sparring Team presented the State vs State Sparring Shield to NAS State Director Nick Dicristofaro. The day started well, with the Harford cousins taking out the Junior Demonstration with Jess Dubois and Catherine Wilkinson taking out the Senior Team event, with a mirror syncronised Kururunfa.

Juniors did well as always. Darcy Munchenberg performed her kata well and took out third place in Forms in the 8-9 year 10 - 6th kyu division, but was unsuccessful in Sparring. In the 10-11 year 10-6th kyu division Forms, Brittany Munchenberg was second and James Swift third, whilst in Sparring James outpointed Brittany to take out the event. In the 5-BB section of this age group, competition was again very close with Jasmine Harford taking out the Forms event from Jalen Croxton, with Demi Harford third, and Stephanie Antolis fourth. In Sparring, Jalen faced Stephanie in one semi-final, with Jasmine facing Demi in the other. Both bouts were tight, with some excellent sparring. However, it was Jalen and Jasmine to advanced to the finals. Jalen took out the final by one point from Jasmine, in one of the best supported events of the day. Demi just outpointed  Stephanie for third place. All competitors did very well. The 12-13 year 5-BB division saw a strong Sepei from Jason Spiteri take him into first place, with Lucille Lott in third. Jason went on to also win the Male Sparring, as did Lucille in the Female Section. In the 14-15 year section, Callum Boyd won Forms and Male Sparring. In the 5-BB section, Daniel Andrew won both Forms and male Sparring.

Junior Continuous events were well supported and our Juniors did well. In the 10-11 year event, Jasmine Harford took out first place, with another convincing performance. The 12-14 year Female event was well fought, with Lucille Lott also taking out her division.

The Senior Continuous events were well supported, with again several successes. Beau Beaumont took out third place in his first attempt at continuous, providing the large audience with several spectacular, although illegal moves. In Female Advanced, Lesley McDonald defeated Jessica Dubois in the final in a very tightly fought bout.

Mid morning saw our competitors in the Senior events. Male Novice division, Chris Taylor won both Forms and Sparring. In Female Intermediate Forms, Linda Donnellan won the event, with  Julie Munchenberg placed second. Julie won the Sparring from Linda to reverse the results. David Boyd placed second and Chris Munchenberg third for Forms in the Male Intermediate division but both lost their first round bouts in Sparring. Female Advanced had a strong group of competitors and Forms was won by Tanya Tregenza from Tamsin Ing. Zoe Tyler was unplaced. In Sparring Jackie Probert faced Tanya in one semi-final, with Jackie winning through to the final despite a strong showing by Tanya. Tamsin and Zoe both won their first round bouts to get through to the other semi-final. Tamsin and Zoe sparred with no quarter but unfortunately Zoe suffered an injury during the bout and had to withdraw, which allowed Tamsin to move through to the final. Jackie and Tamsin both sparred very well but it was Jackie who took out the bout. Tanya took out third place. The Male Advanced competition was also tight, with Corey Burnside placed third and Sean Hutton fourth in Forms. Corey was up first, but a rusty performance saw him narrowly lose the bout. Sean fared much better and won his semi-final to move on. Corey sparred a lot better in the bout for third place and easily took out the place. Sean was up next and in a good and close bout, took out the points to win the event. Veteran Forms saw several different competitors from Round 1, with Chris McDonald taking out third place and Barb Hesselschwerdt in fourth place. In Female Sparring, Barb won the final from Chris.

Ian Rollings was our only competitor in Male Black Belt Open Forms and in a large field, finished just outside of the places. In Sparring, Ian lost a close first round bout to finish out of the places. A large Female Black Belt Open competition saw Lesley McDonald take out the Forms event again, with Dragana Calic in second place. Catherine Wilkinson and Jess Dubois both performed quality kata, but missed out on a place. Jess narrowly lost her first round bout but Lesley won hers to move through to the semi-finals. However, Lesley lost her bout and had to settle for the third place bout. Catherine and Dragana faced off in the other semi-final and this time it was Dragana who took the points over Catherine to advance to the finals. Catherine was unable to contest the third place bout and it was awarded to Lesley. Onto the final and Dragana used her reach to out point her Tang Soo Do opponent to take out first place.

State Team Coach Sensei Jeremy Thompson was again pleased with the efforts of the team on the day. Assistant Coach Sensei Shane Bennett received some excellent feedback from other styles coaches on the performance and demeanour of our competitors which was excellent to receive and a credit to the team.
