A large Team of 38 competitors represented GKR at Round 1 of the 2010 local season., including some old faces back in the team as well as several new competitors. At the end of the day, Team members had amassed 71 places, with 31 firsts, 23 seconds and 17 thirds. It was a very good effort, with all new or returned competitors taking home a trophy. The day started well, with the Harford cousins taking out the Junior Demonstration with a well executed syncronised Bassi-dai. Coach Shane Bennett has been working hard with the girls and the performance showed that they have responded well to his input. The Senior Team of Kate Jamieson, Dragana Calic and Jenny Miller placed second in their event, with a very well executed syncronised Form.

Juniors did very well overall. Darcy Munchenberg performed very well in her first Tournament to take out both Forms and Sparring in the 8-9 year 10 - 6th kyu division. In the 10-11 year 10-6th kyu division James Swift took out Forms from Brittany Munchenberg, whilst in Sparring James placed second and Brittany third. In the 5-BB section of this age group, competition was fierce with Jasmine Harford taking out the Forms event from Demi Harford, with Stephanie Antolis third, with Jalen Croxton fourth. In Sparring, Jalen took out the final from Demi, while Jasmine just outpointed  Stephanie for third place. All competitors did very well. The 12-13 year 5-BB division saw a strong Sepei from Jason Spiteri take him into first place, with Lucille Lott in third. Jason went on to also win the Male Sparring, as did Lucille in the Female Section. Jamie Lonie narrowly lost her first round bout to finish out of the places. On to the 14-15 year section, where we had three new competitors in the 10-6th kyu section. Margie Hookway took out Forms from Callum Boyd, with Madee White third. Callum Boyd took out the Male Sparring event, with Margie Hookway prevailing over Madee White in the Female Sparring to take out first place. In the 5-BB section, Tegan Miller took out the Forms event, with Daniel Andrew placed third. Both Tegan and Daniel placed second in their respective Sparring events. In the 16-17 year 5-BB competition, Jondalar Grenfell-Sexton won both Forms and Male Sparring.

Junior Continuous events were well supported and our Juniors did well. In the 10-11 year event, Jasmine Harford performed very strongly to be a convincing winner. The 12-14 year Female event was very tight with Lucille Lott just getting the points in extra time to win the event. Jamie Lonie fought well but just lost the third place bout to miss out on the trophies. Jondalar Grenfell-Sexton placed second and Callum Boyd took out third place in the 15-17 year event.

The Senior Continuous events were well supported, with several successes. David Boyd placed fourth in Male Novice, while Nik McDonald took out the Male Advanced event. In Female Advanced, Lesley McDonald defeated Kate Jamieson in the final, with Jessica Dubois third.

Mid morning saw several new competitors in the Senior events. Male Novice Forms, saw Chris Taylor win Forms. Chris also took out Sparring in this division. In Female Intermediate Forms, Linda Donnellan won the event, with  Julie Munchenberg placed second. Julie won the Sparring for this division. Steve Tyler was first, David Boyd second and Chris Munchenberg was third for Forms in the Male Intermediate division but all missed out in Sparring. Female Advanced had a strong group of competitors and Forms was won by Kate Jamieson from Zoe Tyler, with Mary Bambacus third. Tamsin Ing performed well against her higher ranked team mates to finish in fourth place. Tamsin did have her moment in Sparring as she took out the event, first winning the semi-final bout over Zoe and then the final over Kate. The result a sweep to the girls. The Male Advanced competition was also tight, but it was Shaun Williams who dominated, taking out both Forms and Sparring. Tim Casey placed second in both Forms and Sparring, with Nik McDonald third in Sparring. Veteran Forms was very well supported with eight competitors. Jenny Miller won the event from Mary Bambacus, with Julie Tynan third. In Male Sparring, Steve Tyler took out the event. In Female Sparring, Julie Tynan and Barb Hessellschwerdt fought out the final, with the more experienced Julie taking the event. Barb was very pleased with her first outing in NAS. Jenny Miller and Chris McDonald had a rather spirited bout for third place, with Jenny the victor.

Male Black Belt Open Forms saw Ben Juett win the event, with Ian Rollings third. Both returned to competition this year after some time off. In Sparring, Ben made the final but lost a close bout to finish second, with a similar tale for Ian in the third place bout, to finish in fourth place. A large Female Black Belt Open competition saw Lesley McDonald take out the Forms event. Dragana Calic had to perform a second Form after originally tying for second place before sealing it with the tie breaker form. The ladies put on a very high standard forms competition. In Sparring, Catherine Wilkinson defeated Dragana Calic in their semi-final bout to make the final. It was a contrasting bout with a lot of high kicks and counter attacks. However, Catherine missed out by 1 point to take out second place. Dragana Calic took out a tight third place bout for the place.

State Team Coach Sensei Jeremy Thompson was well pleased with the efforts of the team on the day, considering there had been only 5 training sessions prior to the tournament. The assistance of Shane, Alan, Seb and Daniel in coaching team members on the day greatly assisted in the results and the confidence of the competitors. Well done to all on a great start to the year.
