Black Belt Grading

The second Black Belt Grading for the year, took place at Enfield High School on Thursday with only two candidates fronting for the adjudication of the Grading Panel, led by Sensei Mark Case. Sensei Joe Van Strijp and Sensei Daniel Tregenza assisted on the night. Following the bow in, Jeremy Thompson took the group through a comprehensive warm up before handing over to Sensei Mark. First up was a series of Basics, first in Heiko dachi and then moving through in stance. This session was quite comprehensive with a strong emphasis on correct technique both in the arms and legs. Following a short break, time for kicks and combos. Both Sensei Daniel and Sensei Joe took parts of the session while Sensei Mark took the opportunity to look at some of the 1st Kyus looking to grade in 2010.

Time for kata, and each one was done several times, with Sensei Mark occasionally taking the opportunity to stress particular points that needed some attention. Following the grading candidates performing their grading kata, Sensei Mark had a look at the higher grade kata to see how they were progressing. Time for kumite and several rounds followed. The grading candidates both performed strongly throughout the sparring session and took it right up to their opponents. A final Yame and it was protective gear off while the assessors adjudicated on the night's performance.

Both candidates were successful in their assessment for Shodan-ho. Barbara Hessellschwerdt and David Weir received their grading certificates and were presented with their Black Belts. Following the bow out, it was time for congratulations and the usual photos. Congratulations to both Barb and David for grading so well. All the extra time with Sensei Daniel certainly ensured that they represented Region 9 well.
